There are three main surface types of tennis courts: concrete, asphalt, and clay. Each offers their own set of advantages and disadvantages that you should consider when resurfacing your tennis court. Other types of surfaces include natural/artificial turf, outdoor modular sport tiles and panels.

Asphalt is a cheaper alternative to concrete. However, keep in mind that asphalt is more susceptible to cracks and will eventually deteriorate leading to more maintenance and repairs down the line. The industry standard provides only a 2 year warranty against cracking.

Reinforced concrete and post tension concrete. Concrete offers the best performance; most durability and greatest longevity of all sport court bases.

Clay courts allow for “slower” play meaning the ball does not bounce as quickly as other courts.

Clay courts also dry quicker than a hard surface court.

They have also been known to prevent injuries allowing players to slide rather than slamming down on the court.

The biggest liability of clay courts is maintenance and the courts become unplayable during freeze and thaw cycles.

Tennis Court Resurfacing

Before

This court was in complete disrepair. There was chipping and cracking in the asphalt and the court looked unplayable. Due to the bad state of the court, it wasn’t being used. There was also a big demand for soccer, volleyball, and pickleball, with its rising popularity.

Tennis Court Resurfacing

After

DeShayes Court Conversions was called to remedy the situation. First we did the crack repair on the painted asphalt surface. Then we installed sports flooring on top of the asphalt, put in net posts with net adjustment system, and put small soccer goals at both ends. Finally, DeShayes painted pickleball, volleyball, and soccer lines, all in different colors so people wouldn’t get confused with the multiple sports offered to play on this single court. Yellow for volleyball, white for pickleball, and blue soccer.

Different Ways To Resurface a Court

The simplest way to resurface your tennis court is to fill the cracks and paint a new acrylic coating overtop. This creates a smooth unblemished surface while maintaining the original type of surface as well as the original feel and playability of the court. This simple repair is warrantied for only one season.

A flexible system that covers a crack and allows players to use a court without knowing the system is in place. Cracks are cleaned and filled then a patented micro sealant tape is put down with an adhesive that does not harden or crystallize. This is followed by a stress mat, then the edges are bonded down to the court and the edges are buffed smooth and a layer of coating is put on top.  This type of resurfacing carries a 3 year warranty and does not cover extensions of existing cracks or new cracks which can appear in as little as 6 months after resurfacing.

Another option would be to add sport tiles to your existing court. The innovative tile design and unique six-point locking system creates a seamless playing surface that allows for consistent ball bounce and response and unmatched playability. Sport tiles/panels have a 16-year warranty.

For homeowners who may be tired of the shorter lifespans of traditional hard-court surfaces adding a turf overlay provides an effective alternative to resurfacing your tennis court. Turf can be installed over any existing court once it has been cleaned and sealed. Turf overlays will not crack or split like traditional hard surfaces offering a safe, family friendly surface.

This system provides an elevated level of comfort. The shock absorbing qualities are achieved by adding a cushioned base followed by multiple coats of cushion finish providing a uniform texture and an attractive color finish without decreasing comfort. This surface can absorb impact preventing injuries and decreasing fatigue. These cushion coatings are used for US Open play.

If your court has been neglected for a long period of time a reinforced concrete or asphalt overlay may be the best solution. The court is stripped down, crack repairs are made, dimensionally stable fabric covers the old surface, a layer of stone dust is added and a new reinforced concrete or asphalt base is laid overtop.
